The year was 1873, just after rebuilding from the Civil War. Horse racing was becoming a popular event and it was the first year of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course, which would soon become the 2nd of the triple crown. Survivor, a young Bay, went into the race at 11-1 odds but made a comeback and won by 10 lengths- a Preakness record that wasn’t broken until 2004! Pimlico’s iconic Victorian style clubhouse burnt down in 1966. Pimlico has always been proving itself worthy of the Preakness Stakes, just like Survivor tried to prove himself worthy of a victory in the inaugural race of the Preakness. This painting is to remind us of the history and passion of thoroughbred racing.
